Balcony Solar (Balkonkraftwerk) Installation Guide

A balcony solar system (German: Balkonkraftwerk) is a small plug-in PV system — typically one or two panels with a micro-inverter — mounted on a balcony railing, wall or façade and plugged into a socket. It's the fastest-growing segment of European residential solar.

• Clamp-on balcony bracket: grips the railing with no drilling — the most popular method for renters.
• Rail mount: a rail fixed along the railing for a rigid, multi-panel hold.
• Adjustable/tilt mount: angles the panel off a vertical railing to recover yield.
• Vertical/façade mount: flush mounting where tilt isn't possible.

1. Check your railing type and the panel weight; choose a clamp rated for both.
2. Position the bracket and clamp it to the railing, levelling the panel.
3. Attach the panel to the bracket and fit a secondary safety tether.
4. Mount the micro-inverter to the bracket or rail (compatible-fit for your model).
5. Connect the panel to the micro-inverter and plug in per local rules — electrical safety first.

Rules are easing but vary. In Germany, balcony systems have been simplified — a higher micro-inverter output allowance (commonly cited around 800 W) and streamlined registration (e.g. Marktstammdatenregister) — but you should confirm the current limits, registration and landlord/Body-Corporate consent for your situation.
